Family photos should feel like you. Not stiff. Not stressful. Not forced.
My goal at Makenna Lynn Photography is to capture your family in a way that feels natural, connected, and true to this season of life. A little preparation goes a long way in helping your session run smoothly and feel effortless.
Here are my favorite tips to help you get the most out of your family photography session.
1. Follow Your Child’s Lead
Kids are not meant to stand still and smile on command. And that is perfectly okay.
Some of the sweetest, most meaningful images come from letting your child explore, cuddle, laugh, or even be a little shy. If they want to twirl, we twirl. If they need a snack break, we pause. If they only want mom, we lean into that connection.
Trust me. The magic is in the in between moments.
2. Pick Outfits in Advance
Please do not wait until the morning of your session to choose outfits. I promise it will reduce stress so much.
Lay everything out a few days ahead of time. Try it on. Make sure everything fits comfortably and feels like you. Neutral, creamy tones with soft textures always photograph beautifully and create that warm, timeless look.
Pro tip: Dress mom first, then coordinate everyone else around her outfit.
3. Bring Layers
Layers add movement, texture, and dimension to your photos. Think cozy cardigans, flowy dresses, denim jackets, light sweaters, or textured knits.
Layers also help if the weather shifts unexpectedly, which it often does here in Indiana. Being prepared keeps everyone comfortable and happy.
4. Keep Snacks Simple
If you’re bringing snacks for little ones, choose something mess free and quick. Think crackers, or small fruit snacks instead of chocolate or brightly colored treats.
A quick snack break can completely reset the mood.
5. Let Go of Perfection
Your child might not smile the entire time. Someone might get a little dirty. The wind might blow your hair.
That is real life.
The most meaningful photos are rarely the perfectly posed ones. They are the ones where you are laughing, holding hands, wiping tears, or pulling your babies close.
Let go of the idea of perfect and focus on connection instead.
6. Have Fun!
This one matters most.
Tickle your kids. Whisper something silly. Squeeze your partner. Run. Spin. Cuddle. Play.
When you relax and genuinely enjoy your family, it shows in every single image.
Final Thoughts
Your family session is not about creating a picture perfect version of your life. It is about preserving the season you are in right now.
The tiny hands. The missing teeth. The way your child reaches for you without thinking.
That is what we are capturing.
If you are looking for a relaxed, lifestyle family photographer in Trafalgar, Franklin, Greenwood, Bloomington, or Brown County, I would love to connect with you.
